The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Behold

Canada is home to more than 50,000 islands, as varied as the extent of this vast country. In 2023, photographer Winston Fraser, produced a beautiful book of photo essays that showcase more than 50 of those islands. In this collection, every region of the country – from coast to coast to coast – is represented. The variety of styles used in the photo-essays by Fraser and a dozen guest contributors makes this a most enjoyable read. It is available at alibris.com.

Grammatically, there are words in the English language that are commands. One such word, is Behold! It is used to get the attention of someone, calling them to look, take notice, be amazed. It is used in one particularly case in the Bible, when Jesus is walking towards His cousin John. John 1:29 says, “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (RSV). John calls his followers to stop what they are doing and take notice. At long last the Promised One had come. John had been preparing his followers for the coming of Jesus. John was one of a few who understood why Jesus had come. Jesus knew, and His mother Mary knew, but so few others did. Jesus had come to die – and by so doing, to take away the sin of the world. The world thought they were looking for a deliverer from the Roman oppressors. John and Jesus knew the need was much greater. Behold, Jesus! The One who came to take away your sin!

These have been words from the heart.
