The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 29:11 NIV

Strength and Peace

In a world where most countries struggle to reduce violence and crime rate, which causes a 13.3% reduction in the Gross Domestic Product of the world, Canada has done remarkably well in establishing peace and safety for its citizens. According to the 2021 Global Peace Index, the country is the 10th most peaceful in the world. This is as a result of her deliberate effort to uphold the attitude which promotes peace in society. Peace is a necessary component of development because it fosters virtues like unity and cooperation, essential for nation-building.

In the world of global relations, nations often long for two things – economic and military strength, and peace. There is even a common political philosophy called peace through strength that posits if a nation has a strong enough military, nobody will dare to threaten that nation and so there will be peace. The Bible speaks about both strength and peace as well, but it means something quite different when it does. In Psalm 29:11 we read, “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.” Living in this world does require a supernatural strength – strength to stand against temptation, strength to love others as Jesus did, strength to be an effective witness for the Gospel. It isn’t easy living Biblically in this world, being salt and light in the spiritual darkness that seems so prevalent. At the same time, knowing that our stand for Christ can be challenging, the Lord gives His peace. This is one of the great blessings of walking with Jesus – the peace that passes understanding in all things. These are offered to you today.

These have been words from the heart.
