Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.
1 Peter 2:2 NIV
Pure Spiritual Milk
Canadians sometimes forget that dairy farming is still very much a family business for the majority of farms across Canada. According to the Dairy Farmers of Canada website “In addition to embodying our farmers’ commitment to animal care and sustainability, Canadian milk is produced following strict quality standards to ensure it’s pure, fresh, and safe to enjoy. Quality is something our farmers are extremely proud of, but it’s what you’d expect from family farms. Our standards ensure Canadian milk is produced with care, safety, and sustainability at its core.”

There is nothing more important for a newborn than to be well fed. The Bible often speaks about new followers of Jesus being like babies in the faith, and just as a newborn needs milk that is pure and healthy, so a new follower of Jesus needs to learn the basics of the Christian faith, through study in God’s Word. The apostle puts it this way in 1 Peter 2:2: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” I was speaking to a friend a while back, and she was telling me about a new believer she knew who couldn’t get enough time with the Bible. He was reading it through for the first time, and was craving even more time, getting to know the Lord. When a baby is born, they crave milk. Peter says that one of the signs of truly being born again is a craving for God’s Word. By reading it, he says, we will mature in our faith – growing up in our salvation.
