…and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.
Mark 16:3-4 NIV
Stone Rolled Away
Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg is among the oldest and largest examples of the garden cemetery tradition in Western Canada. Established in 1878, it is located on Treaty 1 territory and the homeland of the Métis Nation. The cemetery, which is approximately 70 hectares in size, was planned and executed on the prairie landscape. It illustrates many characteristics of the Euro-American garden cemetery style, including winding roads, irregularly shaped islets, a waterway, and park-like landscape design. Brookside Cemetery also hosts one of Canada’s largest Fields of Honour, an area which illustrates military cemetery traditions.

Happy Resurrection Day! When Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, the Romans wanted to ensure that no one would come and steal Jesus’ body. They knew that He had many followers who would want to come and take it away and so would try to convince everyone that Jesus had come back to life. So, the Romans sealed the tomb by rolling a huge stone in front of the entrance and stationing soldiers to guard the place. It’s no wonder that the women, when they were heading to the tomb with anointing oil on Sunday morning, didn’t know how they were going to get the stone rolled away. Mark 16:3-4 says: “…and they asked each other, ‘Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?’ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.” The woman learned a really important lesson that day. What was humanly impossible for these women was possible for God. Jesus burst forth from the grave with the power of God! Death is dead!
These have been words from the heart.
