Words From the Heart for Sunday, May 4, 2025
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Wiped Out
The 1993 Canadian federal election was held on October 25, 1993, to elect members to the House of Commons of the 35th Parliament of Canada. Considered to be a major political realignment, it was one of the most eventful elections in Canada’s history. Two new regionalist parties emerged, finishing second and third in the seat count. Most notably, the election marked the worst defeat for a governing party at the federal level and the worst ever suffered by a governing party in the Western democratic world. The Liberal Party, led by Jean Chrétien, won a majority government, virtually wiping out the Progressive Conservative Party in a landslide.

As we watched the fires in California earlier this year, entire communities were wiped out. It broke our hearts to see people lose everything. At other times, we are happy when things get wiped out. A criminal who has his record wiped clean can celebrate a fresh new start in life. The heart of the Gospel is that this is the experience of every follower of Jesus. The apostle Peter, in his sermon on the Day of Pentecost, said this in Acts 3:19: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,” Jesus died in order that our sins can be removed. His desire is that every human being, all of whom have sinned and fall short of God’s perfect holiness, repent of their sin and turn in faith to Jesus. When we do so, our sins are wiped out and refreshing comes to our soul. You can experience that for yourself, today.
